President Biden Announces New Actions to Keep Families Together
Since assuming office, President Biden has emphasized the importance of securing the U.S. border and reforming the immigration system. Despite facing opposition from Republicans in Congress, the Biden Administration has taken several measures to enhance border security and manage immigration more effectively.
Key actions within this immigration reform, particularly those aimed at protecting Family Unity, are worth mentioning.
President Biden asserts that securing the border is crucial but also stresses the importance of expanding lawful pathways for immigration and keeping families together. He recognizes the contributions of long-term undocumented immigrants who have integrated into American society. The President’s Day One immigration reform plan, although stalled in Congress, aims to balance border security with protections for these immigrants.
Therefore, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will implement a process for noncitizen spouses and children of U.S. citizens to apply for lawful permanent residence without leaving the country.
Eligible noncitizens must have resided in the U.S. for at least 10 years as of June 17, 2024, and be legally married to a U.S. citizen. Approved applicants will have three years to apply for permanent residency and will be eligible for work authorization during this period. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately half a million spouses and 50,000 children of U.S. citizens.
These recent announcements will constitute a great opportunity to secure lawful status in the US.
